OVER 400 PEOPLE DIED OF STROKE IN THE EASTERN REGION.
The New Juaben North Municipal Health Director, Nana Yaa Konadu has disclosed that over 400 and ten people died of Stroke, while 200 and 69 others died from hypertension in hospitals across the Eastern Region in 2019.
Speaking to the media in Koforidua to mark this year’s World Heart Day today/yesterday to highlight the devastating effects of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) and the need to prevent and Control Stroke, she said stroke related mortality in the region is on the high since 2017, stressing that reported cases of cardiovascular disease was more than six thousand cases reported.
She further stated that in 2018 the cases went up to more than seven thousand, 900 cases, while in 2019, over nine thousand cases were reported in the region.
On management and prevention of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke, she said lifestyle modifications is the way to go to prevent and control the disease.
She elaborated that drinking water excessively, eating healthy, eating fruits and vegetables, limiting of salt intake, avoiding fatty foods, avoiding frozen drinks and exercising regularly are things to do to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as strokes and hypertension.
A Representative of Stroke Association Support Network (SASNET) Ghana, Mrs Juliet Anaglo cautioned the public against smoking and drinking of frozen drinks. She challenged the government and all Ghanaians to pay attention to the disease.
The Chairman of Eastern Region Coalition of NGO in Health, Emmanuel Mintah lamented that education on CVD and Stroke is not encouraging and urged the government to prioritize the issues of CVD and Stroke in the country.
The Chairman of Persons living with CVD and Stroke, Samuel Sedodo also appealed to the government to treat the disease as a public health emergency and develop policies that will put the disease on their political agenda.
He further called on the government to make the treatment of CVD and Stroke accessible and affordable to all Ghanaians.
