MEDIA PRACTITIONERS VIEWS ON NEXT PARLIAMENT

 Story by Michael Kenetey Kofi

A section of student journalists of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) have shared their views on the composition of the next Parliament that will commence its official work from the seventh of next month.

The results of the just ended parliamentary and presidential elections as declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensah indicated that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has one hundred and 37 seats, while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has one hundred and 36 seats, one independent seat and one outstanding seat yet to be declared by the EC.

This means that whether the yet to be declared seat goes either way, it will not make any of the parties have absolute majority in the eighth Parliament. This has generated diverse views among the student journalists of GIJ.

While some of them believe the development is a good fortune for the country, others think otherwise. Some of the students said it will promote thorough scrutiny of bills and policies, promote checks and balances and also reduce absenteeism in Parliament.

They added that since no party will have absolute majority in Parliament, it will limit the passing of obnoxious bills and policies and thus reduce the executive from exercising control and influence on the legislature.

Some of the students also noted that the eighth Parliament will stop hasty passage of laws. Some of the students stated that the composition of the next Parliament will compel the new speaker to be fair in handling members of Parliament.

They concluded that the next Parliament will help promote accountability and transparency of the President Akufo-Addo Administration since every policy and bill will be subjected to serious scrutiny before it is passed.

They also noted that the next speaker of Parliament must be somebody who will be able to bring both the ruling and the opposition Members of Parliament together to promote national interest.
