BENEFITS OF EATING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

A  Dietician at the Koforidua Regional Hospital, Esther Owusu Agyei has advised Ghanaians to consume more fruits and vegetables daily. 

She said consuming more fruits and vegetables provide the body with anti-oxidants that help to fight against chronic diseases. 

Speaking on Koforidua-based radio Development Agenda on the benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables, she said they serve as organic immune booster adding that fruits provide the body with all the vitamins that the body needs for growth and also provides the body with fibre that helps reduce weight. According to her, it is advisable for everyone to eat fruits every day.



Clarifying the misconception on whether it is right to eat fruits before or after eating cooked food, she stated that there is no specific time to eat fruits stressing that there has not been any research on that. 

 She however pointed out that some fruits such as oranges, apples and pineapples have high acidic contents, hence it is advisable to eat foods before taking such fruits. She explained that vegetables also provide the body with vitamins, dietary fibre, and anti-oxidants.

 She said vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, dandelion and all the green vegetables provide the body with calcium and iron.

 The Project Manager of Youth Support Podium, Albert Freeman-Aikins testified on the benefits he has derived by regularly consuming fruits and vegetables. 

He said this has helped to reduce his cholesterol level and diseases associated with high cholesterol.
