GIJ Unveils 60th Anniversary Milestone
-Tasked To Review Curricula

The Minister for Business Development Dr. Ibrahim Awal Mohammed, has tasked the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) to consider the introduction of social media courses into its curricula
According to him, it is high time the country's premier communication university included such a programme in view of the impact of social media use in the country.
He argued that the school needs to review its curricula to include the course considering the huge effect of social media on human lives.
Dr. Mohammed, the guest of honour and a past student of the university speaking at the launch of the 60th Anniversary celebration of the School in Accra on the theme: Remembering Our Past, Inspiring Our Future said journalist must use the profession as a channel to make impact and help shape society.
The former GIJ student advised journalists to have society at heart and serve society with dignity and society will in turn reward them handsomely.
The Business Development Minister urged the students and journalist to invest and set up businesses adding that a lot of journalists die of poverty after they retire from job.
Dr. Awal also deposited Fifty thousand Ghana Cedis for the establishment of a One Million GIJ Endowment Fund and also encouraged past students and corporate organizations to support in order to help improve teaching and learning in the school.
In an address, Professor Kwasi-Ansu Kyeremeh, Chairman GIJ's Governing Council disclosed that proceeds from the Endowment Fund would help the school to invest in technology that will help to train students to be able to meet the technology-based job market and also be able to adapt to the dynamic ways of communication.
Professor Kyeremeh, also called Nana Fobi Kropa III, Apemanimhene in the Ashanti Region, assured that the GIJ Endowment Fund will be managed by a Board of Trustees which compose of Public partners, eminent persons, media practitioners, Faculty members and distinguished members of the Alumni.
Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, stated that it was a privilege and an honour to be the Rector of the University at the period when the school will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary.
He said the anniversary is to bring all stakeholders of the Institute together in reviewing the past and looking into the future with a relief interest of hope, enthusiasm and purpose.
The Institute was established by Ghana's first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and opened by the then Information Minister Kofi Baako on 16th of October 1959 as an institution to train cadre of journalists in the country and Sub-Saharan Africa.
