GIJ 60th ANNIVERSARY LAUNCHED
The Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) has launched their 60th anniversary at the School Forecourt on Friday 1st March 2019.
The Institution that was established by the then first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and opened by the then Information Minister Mr. Kofi Baako on Monday 16th of October 1959 as an institution to train cadre of journalists in the country and Sub-Haran Africa
The occasion was graced by the Invited GUESTS, the School Management, The Governing Council, Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff, School Alumni and the Students’ Body.
The theme of the Anniversary is “Remembering Our Past, Inspiring Our Future”. The launch of the Anniversary on Friday 1st of March 2019 means the celebration of the Anniversary starts on that day to the 16th of October 2019 which will involve a lot of events and activities throughout the period.
In the welcome address of the Anniversary launch, Professor Kwasi-Ansu Kyeremeh, the chairman of the Institution's Governing Council who is also called Nana Fobi Kropa III, Apemanimhene in the Ashanti Region, said the launch of the Anniversary is also to launch a One Million Ghana Cedis Endowment Funds. He said “no communication no development and no communication no society”.
The one million Ghana cedis fund is the flagship initiative programme of the 60th Anniversary celebration of the school. The initiative is to help the school invest in technology that will help to train students to be able to meet the technology-based job market and also be able to adapt to the dynamic ways of communication.
Professor Kwasi-Ansu Kyeremeh said “the GIJ Endowment Fund will be managed by a board of trustees which compose of Public partners, Imminent persons, Media practitioners, Faculty members and Distinguished members of the Alumni”.
Giving the purpose of the gathering, Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo also stated that it was a privilege and distinguished honour to be the Rector of the Institute at the period when the school will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary.
In his submission, he said the celebration of the Anniversary is to bring all stakeholders of the Institute together in reviewing the past and looking into the future with a relief interest of hope, enthusiasm and purpose. He also said the launch has brought most stakeholders of the school together.
In addition to the submission by the Rector Professor Kwansah-Aidoo, he encouraged all stakeholders of the school to make a significant input into the new cloth that we see to chat as we usher the school into a new era.
The Guest of Honour for the programme who happens to be Old student of the institution, Dr. Ibrahim Awal Mohammed, Minister of Business Development advised students to use journalism as a channel to make impact in a society and help shape society.
He advised journalists to have society at heart and serve society with dignity and society will in turn reward them handsomely.
Dr. Awal also deposited the sum of Fifty thousand Ghana cedis to open the One Million GIJ Endowment Fund and also encouraged past students and corporate organizations to support the funds to help improve teaching and learning skills in the school. He also promised to help raise money for the Endowment Fund.
He added that the school needs to review its curricula to include social media courses because social media has made so much impact on human lives.
In addition Dr. Mohammed Awal said he believes by the end of 16th October 2019 that the Anniversary will come to end, the target for the Endowment Fund will be achieved and exceeded by 10%.
In conclusion, Dr. Mohammed Awal advised the students and journalist present at the launch to invest and set up businesses in the little that they receive as salaries. He said a lot of journalists die of poverty after they retire from job. In order to hinder such occurrence in the lives of the young journalists, he encouraged each and every journalist to invest in the little they receive during the course of their work.
